Translation, Transcreation and Localization

At Valle Translations, we aim at a functional, dynamic, and pragmatic translation, which focuses on communicating the message of the source text in such a way that is faithful to it. We also take very much into account the cultural nuances and customs of a diverse audience, with a focus on the client’s specific target reader and their extralinguistic context, such as socio-cultural and historical aspects. To accomplish this, we make use of a wide variety of translation techniques and language resources, including but not limited to adapting a metaphor or idiomatic expression so that it resonates with the reader. Therefore, the intention of the source text and the target culture are key components of the translation process. For example, for marketing purposes, sometimes transcreation is needed, which is close to an adaptation based on what action and reactions the client expects to generate in their audience. And some other times, localization is needed instead, which aims at translating a text for a specific region or country. This is the opposite of globalization, which tends to produce only one translation for many different cultures. Thus, localization is a type of “intra-translation”, for example, localizing a Mexican translation for the Argentinean community (dialect to dialect translation). It can also be applied to localize a text that was translated neutrally, or to lower the register of a text that was translated following the higher register of the original document. The purpose of the translation will dictate whether translation, transcreation and/or localization is needed.

About the Process
A translation starts with the comprehension and interpretation of the original (source) text. At this point, the tone, style and intention of the author are assessed, along with the original audience and the purpose of communication. Following a thorough research and employing a variety of translation techniques and strategies, the message is conveyed in such a way to fit the target audience needs and preferences.
The original document is thoroughly analyzed in order to produce an accurate translation that will satisfy the requirements of our customers. Regardless of the translator’s expertise in a particular field, communicating the intended message in a different language always involves detailed research. In order to conduct this research, our translators use multiple resources, such as monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, synonym and antonym dictionaries, encyclopedias, forums, grammar guidelines and specific glossaries. Valle Translations also counts on the priceless collaboration of other professional and published linguistic consultants, who offer their invaluable knowledge, skills, and insights. We use computer-assisted translation (CAT) solutions to maintain consistency in all translated texts, including translation memories, concordances, terminology managers, full-text searching and postediting tools, as well as quality assurance tools, to name a few.
